Mobile App Review: MyFitnessPal
The application I chose to review is called MyFitnessPal. Some of you may be familiar with it. I was introduced to this app 3-4 years ago and have been using it on and off for weeks at a time when I remember to. That being said I love and appreciate the ease of access this app has when someone wants to counter their macronutrients or calories.
The usability of this app is probably at a 7/10. I’d say it is about at the middle of the pack for most fitness or health related apps. It’s fairly simple and easy to use because of the quick menu that is always present at the bottom of the screen. It very responsive and immediately calculates data when entered. Some applications have wait times programmed into their code that give a loading bar or circle when data is entered. I despise that. It is just fluff and unnecessary.
I think the design is great! With all the components categorized and shown in vertical format, it makes it easy to look at especially with the ‘dark mode’ we all love! I would give the design a 8/10. Because it is simple and function, it works seamlessly as you command it to. No hiccups.
Functionality is what I value most with this application. You can enter almost any food you are going eat because of the large database of food names and values given to them based on volume, weight or serving. This makes the application versatile for people who want to be as accurate as possible or for people who want to track their food intake but aren’t so worried about the extra grams of food they eat to clean off their plate. Computation is immediate just like a calculator, and you can even change the unit of measure for any food as much as you like. This makes it increasingly easy to enter your meals details.
As a side note, there are many other features to this application. Entering what you drink, what exercise you accomplish and even what calories you burn counted on your watch are a few of the features available on this app. There are free meal and exercise plans for better physical, mental and emotional health. There’s even advice on how some practices will help you get better sleep! That all aside, the real meat and potatoes comes from paying for a premium membership. I do not pay for it but I’m sure users who do love it even more. Despite the pay wall, I still find this application to be a great tool that is still almost completely useful without having to pay a standard subscription we see in so many modern apps these days. Most developers hold back the entire use of applications without getting paid but this app lets you use most of its features without taking your money. It’s great for every user!
Attached are a few screenshots to show what the app looks like and how the layout is easy to use and navigate. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk :)
